I would like to share with you the proceedings of the 12th International Wheat Genetics Symposium I attended recently in Yokohama Japan (www2.convention.co.jp/iwgs12/program.html). Below is a summary of European initiative described in one presentation, some of which are new. Do not hesitate to contact me should wish to have additional information about this meeting.

Presentation of Benjamin Kilian, IPK Germany, Major initiatives to improve wheat production in Europe
- Breedwheat www.breedwheat.fr led by Jacques Legouis. BREEDWHEAT aims at strengthening the competitiveness of the French wheat breeding sector as well as to address the societal demand for sustainability, quality, and safety in agricultural production. This pre-competitive project developed over a period of nine years for a total investment of 34 million Euros by 26 partners (including 13 public research units from INRA/Universities and 10 partners from private companies and cooperatives)
- Adaptawheat wheat, UK project, www.jic.ac.uk/ADAPTAWHEAT/index.htm. Genetics and physiology of wheat development to flowering: Tools to breed for improved adaptation and yield potential. The overall objective of this project is the timely delivery of knowledge, variation and tools to breeding programmes for developmental attributes of wheat that will improve adaptation and yield. This addresses short term global and European food security issues and establishes a platform for long term genetic gain and maintenance breeding. 4 years project started in 2012
- Wheat Improvement Strategic Program (WISP, http://www.wheatisp.org/), UK led by Graham Moore. The WISP consortium is a BBSRC funded collaborative programme for wheat improvement, which brings together experts from five UK institutions. This cross institutional programme will run from 2011 to 2017 and will produce new and novel wheat germplasm characterised for traits relevant to academics and breeders and will identify genetic markers for selecting these traits. The programme is structured around three complementary "pillars" (Landraces, Synthetics and Ancestral Gene Introgression) each of which will broaden the pool of genetic variation in wheat by a different route. Two cross-linking themes, Genotyping and Phenotyping, provide the "Entablature" connecting the Pillars. A fourth pillar, which will involve the production of elite wheat cultivars will be resourced independently by private breeding companies.
- Proweizen, Germany www.bdp-online.de/de/GFP/Ueber_uns/ contact Tanja Gerjet. The "proWeizen" initiative is coordinated by the German Federation of Private Plant Breeders (GFP). Its aim is to coordinate and foster German wheat research. It consists of leading research institutes, and private companies and organizations involved in wheat breeding.
- Wheaalbi, a new KBBE European project led by Gilles Charmet, starts in 2014 , utilizing genomics resources for pre-breeding. Work plans include access to 1000 wild accession for wheat and barley, genotypic data based on capture of exome, phenotyping using Lemnatech system, bioinformatics support, allele mining, Genomics assisted breeding/genomics selection, Management practices
